Phil Housley vaults to top of Panthers’ list

Most recent reports coming out of South Florida have Nashville Predators assistant coach Phil Housley moving to the top of the Florida Panther coaching candidate list – with DU’s Jim Montgomery in a solid secondary position.  General Manager Dale Tallon will not be able to interview Housley until the end of the Preds’ Stanley Cup Final run against the Pittsburgh Penguins. So expect the already long, drawn out process to continue for several more weeks. Continue reading Phil Housley vaults to top of Panthers’ list

Denver-Notre Dame: the fish that ate the whale

On paper, it’s not even a fair contest. Notre Dame is a financial powerhouse while the University of Denver with a solid 25 consecutive years of operating profits still falls deeply in the financial shadow of the South Bend behemoth. Yet, in lacrosse Denver has won 5 straight against games against the Fighting Irish, four by 1-goal margins, three in overtime, and the hockey team throttled the Irish 6-1 at the Frozen Four.

How can Denver compete?

Jim Montgomery facing mounting pressure

Photo: Carly Rae Jepson is almost as famous for her terrible first pitch as she is for her music. And she’s Canadian, too.

DU Hockey head coach Jim Montgomery is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of the Colorado Rockies game against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Coors Field. The Pioneers are being honored by the Rockies for winning the national title a little over a month ago. No doubt, Montgomery is feeling the pressure – and he’s getting a little coaching from a former Montreal Expo.  Continue reading Jim Montgomery facing mounting pressure

On thin ice: a study in hockey coaching relationships

Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reported yesterday that Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon and DU head coach Jim Montgomery are set for a second interview. Still, Montgomery insists that everything must be ‘perfect’ for him to leave. As for Tallon, “We have interviewed six guys and we have another half dozen we plan to speak to.”

So, just where is this relationship going? Continue reading On thin ice: a study in hockey coaching relationships

LetsGoDU got exclusive access to an interview with Craig Patrick, a seminal figure as a hockey player for DU and an assistant coach to Herb Brooks 1980 USA Olympic hockey team. The self-described, “luckiest guy in the world” came to DU by chance when his uncle who was a general manager of the New York Rangers persuaded him to go to DU instead of turning pro.

Craig Patrick will be a featured speaker and guest at DU Alumni Weekend on Saturday, May 20th.

Panthers, spiders, and snakes – oh my!

Jim Montgomery met with the Florida Panthers on Monday. While the meeting was held privately, here is our take on the interview between Dale Tallon (DT), GM Florida Panthers and DU head coach Jim Montgomery (JM).

9:10 am – Undisclosed Hotel – Sunrise, Florida

DT: Big Jim – Welcome to the land of gators and fire ants.

JM: Yeah nice…the kids are enjoying it here. They had never seen Kudzu.

DT: It’s a great place, Jim. The homes are nice – just make sure you get one built to withstand tropical storms and hurricanes. Mold can be bad, too. Kids have asthma? Continue reading Panthers, spiders, and snakes – oh my!

NCHC must look west for growth

As an old musher used to say, “The lead dog has the best view”.

In this writer’s view, the NCHC is currently sitting pretty. However, now is not the time to sit and enjoy the sights. The NCHC should begin to work to create a short and long-term strategic plan to grow the NCHC into a truly national conference. The plan would protect the league’s short-term stability and provide long-term growth while ensuring its premier status.  Continue reading NCHC must look west for growth
