Henrik Borgström lifts Denver back into 1st place with overtime goal

Henrik Borgström, the artist, only had one goal all night, but it was the one that mattered most for the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers. With 1:16 left in overtime, Borgström took a Troy Terry pass and wristed it under #18 St Cloud State University goalie Jeff Smith’s right arm to give the Pioneers a key 4-3 victory to reclaim 1st place in the NCHC. Evans Curse may be coming to an end

The two universities founded by John Evans, Northwestern University and the University of Denver, have never made it to the NCAA basketball tournament. It has been 78 years for the Wildcats (20-7, 9-5 Big 10), the longest drought of any major conference basketball program. Members of the original 120 Division I teams to never make the NCAA tournament include Army, The Citadel, St. Francis (NY), William & Mary, and of course Northwestern. Denver’s futility is somewhat softened because the Pioneers were a Division II program from 1979 to 1998. Denver has whiffed all 59 years, though. Upperclassman leaders play important role for Denver Hoops

Senior Josiah Dunn and redshirt junior Duke Douglas are making their final on-court appearance at Magness Arena Wednesday night.

Though they haven’t received major minutes on the court this season, both Douglas and  Dunn are classic ‘glue guys’ who hold the team together by example – hard work, accountability, and cooperation. Both are widely respected for their experience and work ethic both on and off the court at DU. LetsGoDU caught up with head coach Rodney Billups and assistant coach Dan Ficke to get their thoughts on these two upperclassmen. Puck Swami: Denver Pioneer History Being Made Before Our Very Eyes

12456995

At this very moment on Feb. 20, 2017, for the first time in history, our two flagship sports, ice hockey and men’s lacrosse, are both ranked #1 in the country in all the major polls of those two sports.

For our small private school in the Rockies with 5,500 undergrads and a budget 1/10th the size of some of the large D-I football powers, with our opponents spread out all over the country and requiring jet planes to get to 85% of DU away games, this is an astonishing, epic achievement.

Additionally, our men’s soccer team finished #3 in the country this fall. And our women’s gymnastics team is currently ranked #8 in the country, the highest the program has ever been ranked.  And DU women’s lacrosse is undefeated this year and ranked #14/15 in the country. And our nationally ranked swim teams (#20 men’s and #26 women’s) just swept the podium in EVERY EVENT at the Summit League Championships last week.

I say all this because we need to take a moment to realize just how frickin’ good our athletics program is right now.  No program in the country gets better performance for the buck than DU does.  And now is the time to tell your friends from bigger schools that the Pioneers are on top of the country in two sports.  Let’s hope both can end their seasons with a National Championship.

For those of us oldsters who remember the days when DU played hockey in a decrepit old WWII surplus naval drill hall and DU lacrosse played mostly clubs and small colleges on muddy fields in front of 50 people, we can only say how proud we are to see just how far DU has come as a national sports power.

Go Pios!

Pioneers earn first conference road sweep over Miami

In American Hero fashion, Troy Terry scored the game-winning goal and his second of the night beating Ryan Larkin five-hole to contribute to the [2/2] University of Denver Pioneers 5-2 victory and weekend sweep over the [NR/NR] Miami-Ohio [Miami] RedHawks. Earning their road, first in-conference sweep after last night’s 5-2 win at Steve Cady Arena, this momentum is vital with the conference playing closing and the NCHC Playoffs and the NCAA Tournament approaching. WATCH: Connor Cannizzaro, Trevor Baptiste, & Bill Tierney talk Duke win

Earlier today, the #1 University of Denver Pioneers men’s lacrosse team ran past Duke 14-9 thanks in large part to star FOGO Trevor Baptiste’s incredible second half at the X. As DU head coach Bill Tierney notes below, Duke is a better team than many are giving them credit for in the early going, so this is an important victory for the Crimson and Gold. WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks 12th straight win over CC, first place in the NCHC

Last night, the #2 University of Denver Pioneers went into the World Arena and skated the Colorado College Tigers out of the building with a 5-1 victory. It was Denver’s 12th straight victory over their in-state rival and the victory vaulted them over UMD and into first place in the NCHC. On top of it all, the win was Denver’s 20th of the year, which made it 16 straight seasons with at least 20 wins (the Tenzer Streak). WATCH: Bill Tierney, Connor Cannizzaro, & Ethan Walker talk season-opening win over Air Force

Yesterday, the University of Denver Men’s Lacrosse team topped the Air Force Falcons 14-6 thanks in large part to a three-goal outburst in the final 17 seconds of the third quarter. DU head coach Bill Tierney was rather pleased with his team’s effort.

Senior attack Connor Cannizzaro and freshman attack Ethan Walker both joined Tierney in the postgame press conference to talk about their growth together and what they saw out of Air Force. Walker is one of the most humble star players you’ll ever see and Cannizzaro is…well he’s Cannizzaro and you can’t beat being Cannizzaro.

Watch what Tierney, Cannizzaro, and Walker had to say below:
