With a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois, Denver men’s soccer extended its regular season unbeaten streak to 28 games. Boasting a 9-0-2 record thus far in 2016, the Pioneers are maintaining their top ten status in the national rankings, currently ranked at #8. As such, the program is looking to advance further this year in hopes of winning its first national title. After going undefeated in the regular season last year and snapping its 29-match home unbeaten streak during the second round of the NCAA tournament, the team has returned with a vengeance and is determined to achieve their preseason goals.
The 8th ranked DU men’s soccer team played the game of the weekend on Saturday in a back and forth affair with IPFW. Defensive midfielder Graham Smithscored the game’s opening goal in the first half and the final goal in the 79th minute to squeak by Fort Wayne 4-3 in DU’s Summit League opener at CIBER Field. The No. 8 ranked Denver Pioneers travelled to Omaha, Nebraska to face the No. 12 ranked Creighton Bluejays, finishing in a tie following extra time. Sure, Denver has played in a number of regular season tilts in hockey and lacrosse ranked as a top 10 program facing other top ranked programs . But off the ice and lacrosse field, this Wednesday night’s game is the biggest regular season game ever for the University of Denver.
It took an 87th-minute goal from Blake Elder to keep the #8 University of Denver Pioneers’ winning streak alive. While it appeared DU and the University of North Florida Ospreys might end the game deadlocked at 0, the Pioneers found a way to end the game in regulation. On a beautiful Colorado night, interrupted by a brief drizzle and lightning delay, the Denver Pioneers dominated with two first half goals and cruised to a convincing 2-0 victory over the University of St Louis Billikens. The University of St. Louis Billikens visit CIBER field tonight. They were the dominant force in men’s collegiate soccer during the late 1950s through the mid-1970s. The Billikens have won 10 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championships – the most of any men’s college soccer program. Also, according to Wikipedia, SLU also holds the record for most NCAA Tournament appearances with 44 – most recently in 2014. They were guided in the past by two coaching legends. Head Coach Bob Guelker led them to their first five championships while Harry Keough coached the last five championship teams They hail from the Atlantic 10 conference. Their current record is 1-1-2 with an impressive win over Wake Forest (1-0 final) and ties with Tulsa and Marquette. Their loss came against North Carolina in Chapel Hill (0-3 final). When looking at DU’s top 20 men’s soccer schedule, you may have glossed over DU first regular season opponent, Air Force. Because Air Force is a local non-conference foe, DU’s fall athletic teams have to play the Cadets early in the season. DU’s opening season match is this Saturday at the Academy.
